The Hugh E. Stephenson Jr., MD, Department of Surgery provides exemplary care to patients, trains the surgical leaders of tomorrow and conducts research on increasingly advanced procedures and equipment.

The University of Missouri’s highly skilled and experienced surgeons offer patients the latest innovations in a wide variety of surgical specialties. They use the best techniques and technology to give both adult and pediatric patients the safest and most compassionate care available. Many procedures are performed in outpatient settings, offering patients an early return to normal daily activities.

MU’s faculty educators also are devoted to teaching medical students, residents and fellows about surgery and its subspecialties. The department has had a strong reputation in undergraduate and graduate medical education since the 1950s. Whether their interests are clinical or academic, physicians-in-training receive exceptional learning experiences in fully accredited programs that are designed to produce surgeons who are leaders in their fields.

Surgery department faculty members, fellows and residents also are involved in research that addresses some of the most prevalent health problems, from cancer to obesity. These researchers take advantage of abundant opportunities to participate in highly creative and collaborative studies with the many biomedical scientists and engineers at the University of Missouri.
