A Phase II Study of Radiation with Concomitant and then Sequential Temozolomide in Patients with Newly Diagnosed Supratentorial Malignant Glioma who have Undergone Surgery with Gliadel® Wafer Insertion
Patients who are eligible and chose to participate in this study are treated with surgical removal of as much of the tumor as is possible, and have Gliadel wafers (a wafer laced with chemotherapy) placed into the tumor at the time of surgery. They then receive radiation therapy and low dose Temodar chemotherapy. Following completion of radiation, they begin Temodar chemotherapy at a higher dose. Each of these treatments is available without the patient participating in the trial, but the combination of all three is only available as part of the research project at present. If you would like to learn more about the study, please contact Cathy Cartwright at cartwrightc@health.missouri.edu.

Research by Dr. Scott Litofsky

The laboratory in Neurological Surgery is involved in a number of research projects. Brain tumor tissue and blood from patients surgically treated at University Hospital is currently being banked for future use, under the auspices of an IRB-approved protocol to protect patient identity. Cells also are cultured and grown for use from these specimens. Research looking at the relationships between neural stem cells and brain tumors are underway, as are studies examining tumor invasion.

Clinical Trials

Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG 98-13)
A phase III (phase I closed) randomized study of radiation therapy and temozolomide (IND# 60,265) vs. radiation therapy & BCNU for anaplastic astrocytoma and mixed anaplastic oligoastrocytoma (astrocytoma dominant).

Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG 0424)
A phase II study of temozolomide-based chemioradiotherapy regimen for high risk low-grade gliomas.
