Medical Student EducationThe Division of Neurosurgery participates in the problem-based learning curriculum of the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine. Third-year students review neurosurgical patient histories and observe neurosurgical operations. Seminars in neurosurgical topics are presented to the third-year students. Specialized clinical rotations are available for fourth-year students. Summer Research Fellowship ProgramTwo Summer Research Fellowship positions are available to qualified medical students in the Division of Neurosurgery. Each student receives a $2,000 stipend (one provided by the MU School of Medicine and the other by the Department of Surgery.) The student is involved in one of the research projects of the Division of Neurosurgery and gains experience in animal surgery; participates in data acquisition and analysis; and in preparation of research reports. ExternshipsResearch and clinical externships are available for students from other medical schools. Dr. Black Prize for Excellence in NeurosurgerySamuel P. W. Black, MD, established the Division of Neurosurgery at the University of Missouri in 1955. Following his death in June 1990, his family, colleagues, former students and residents established a fund in his memory to provide for an annual award to a medical student showing excellent potential in neurosurgery. |
