Hugh E. Stephenson Jr., MD
A 1943 graduate of the MU School
of Medicine, Dr. Stephenson was
heavily involved in the lobbying effort
to establish a four-year medical school
at the University. As a surgeon he
developed the first course in cardiac
resuscitation, designed and developed
one of the first mobile cardiac resuscitation
units and performed the first
open-heart surgery at University
Hospital in 1958.
During his 50 years on MU’s medical
faculty he served as professor and
chair of surgery and chief of general
surgery. He also spent 12 years as the
first elected chief of staff at University
Hospital and served as interim dean of
the medical school.
Stephenson “retired” in 1992 but
continues his close association with
the University and the School of
Medicine. In 1996 he was named to
the Board of Curators and served as its
president. In 2003, the MU Alumni
Association presented him with a
Henry S. Geyer Award for his many
contributions to the School of
Medicine and University during the
past 50 years. MU’s department of surgery
also was named in honor of Dr.
Stephenson in 2003.
